Why, Why, Why Did I Aim High?

Hey Darlins,

Well, I had such high hopes for Florida Georgia Line after they forayed from their usual bro country rap drivel and put out such an amazingly good traditional country song in "Dirt". I was hoping that Mr. Hubbard and Mr. Kelley were turning over a whole new leaf with their music.

*sigh*

Here are lyrics from their latest song, "Sun Daze" where they discuss the merits of getting stoned:

I sit you up on a kitchen sink
Stick the pink umbrella in your drink

See what happens when you aim high, Darlins?

Yes, these are actual lyrics.

Yes, I just threw up a little in my mouth.

I'm walking away now lest folks accuse me of being a "hater".

Blowin' Kisses (and walking away),

Who Will Win The CMA Awards? (My Take)

(I actually wrote this article a few days ago and then neglected to publish it. I suck.)

Hey Darlins,

Let's talk about...the CMA Awards!

Yes, it's that time again. This time it's the 48th annual awards show.

The awards are scheduled to air on Wednesday, November 5th on ABC. It will take place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Hosting again will be Brad Paisley and mama-to-be Carrie Underwood.

It will be the day after the midterm elections so this should be good. (Yeah, that was snark.)

OK, I'm not going to address Jason Aldean's "snub" (which really wasn't IMO), I'm just going to address the current nominees.

The top nominee is Miranda Lambert with NINE nominations.  (She's nominated twice in a couple of categories.)

Dierks Bentley came in second with five nominations.

Keith Urban and Eric Church came in third with four nominations.

Miranda's hubby Blake Shelton earned three nominations.

This is called "Who I Think Should Win, Who Will Probably Win, and Who Could Upset".

Just a side commentary...I sort of, kind of predicted the nominees. I mean, these days...I hate to say it, but you pretty much figure out who is going to be nominated in the categories. It's usually the same folks every time. That's not a slight against the artists nominated. My gripe is more against Music Row. Music Row folks need to realize that there is a LOT of great talent out there who works just as hard and they need to start recognizing them for what they do.

Anyway...on to the nominations.

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR

Luke Bryan
Miranda Lambert
Blake Shelton
George Strait
Keith Urban

Who I Think Should Win:  "King" George Strait

Who Will Probably Win:  George Strait will win (and upset Luke Bryan fans) or Luke Bryan will win (and upset everyone else)

Who Could Upset:  Blake Shelton (although the choice would make sense considering Mr. Shelton has been EVERYWHERE in the past year)

OK...and for the folks asking where is Taylor? Uh...where have you all been??? Taylor is POP. She has been POP for a while now. She has just decided to finally announce it. So it's surprising she was even nominated in the Female Vocalist of the Year category.

And as Forrest Gump would say, "And that's all I have to say about that."

OK, I have a lot of "gum flapping" to do, here.

Honestly, as someone else mentioned on a message board I read, I fail to see how some videos were eliminated in this category.

"Somethin' Bad" and "Drunk On A Plane" I get. The others...while good...not better than some others I've seen. I think I liked the songs better than I liked the vids.

Kellie Pickler's "Someone Somewhere Tonight"?

Even though it wasn't my favorite song, I was surprised they eliminated Brantley Gilbert's "Bottom's Up".

I mean, where the hell was Randy Houser's "Like A Cowboy" in this category?!! That video was a great throwback to the old westerns and no noms?!!

Blake Shelton's "Doin' What She Likes" (hilarious)?

Did any of the judges watch any videos this year at all?!!

Anyway, I will just work with what they gave me. *sigh*

(And for any of you yelling, "Well, why don't you just go ahead and create your own video if you can do better, hot shot?!!" Well, give me a hot artist, some money, a camera and an opportunity and I will. So there.)

Who I Think Should Win:  "Drunk On A Plane"

Who Will Probably Win:  "Drunk On A Plane" or "Somethin' Bad"

Who Could Upset:  No upset I could see here, really.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR

Brandy Clark
Brett Eldredge
Kip Moore
Thomas Rhett
Cole Swindell

Who I Think Should Win:  Brandy Clark

Who Will Probably Win:  Thomas Rhett or Cole Swindell *sigh*

Who Could Upset:  It better be Brandy Clark. That is all. (Although I do like Brett Eldredge. He can sing, seems like a cool guy and isn't putting out any of that "bro country" crap.)

Okay, so those are your CMA nominees for the year, darlins.

Will Miss Sunset be right? Will she be wrong?

Regardless of who wins, I'm looking forward to seeing some of my favorites perform.

Oh, and the awards will be after I see Blake Shelton in concert...twice...and possibly the Zac Brown Brown and Sturgill Simpson (who hopefully will be nominated in all of these categories one day), and who knows what else will have happened? So I may have changed my mind five times since then. Who knows?

At any rate, let's stay tuned!

Blowin' Kisses,

Sunset

God Bless The United States of America

Darlins,

On the somber 13th anniversary of September 11th, I would be remiss not to post this beautiful song by country legend Alan Jackson.

I remember all too well. :(

God Bless the United States of America,

Sunset

Hank3 Speaks

Hey Darlins,

Well, yesterday I posted about Hank Williams' grandson Hank Williams III or Hank3, as he professionally goes by, and his feelings about British actor Tom Hiddleston portraying his grandfather in the upcoming biopic. Hank has been rather vocal that an American, specifically a Southerner, should portray his grandfather, who is a symbol of Americana.

Since Hank3 had left comments on a recent article about the movie on the popular Saving Country Music blog (see http://www.savingcountrymusic.com/hank3-talks-new-hank-williams-movie-upcoming-tour) the blog's author Trigger decided to interview Hank3 more in depth about his feelings.

Prior to reading the interview, I wondered if some of Hank3's issues were sour grapes or just plain xenophobia (due to the gripes about a British actor portraying his grandpa), but after reading the interview, I realize that the man just wants the best project possible made. And who could blame him?

I also wondered why hadn't director Mark Abraham or producers contacted Hank3 about portraying his grandfather. After all, Chiquis Rivera, daughter of the late Mexican banda singer Jenni Rivera, will be portraying her mother in the upcoming movie about her life. Hank3 looks and sounds the part more than anyone.

At any rate, I really enjoyed reading this interview and learning more about Hank3 and his feelings on the biopic, Tom Hiddleston (which aren't as scathing as some would like to think), and his upcoming tour.

Sturgill, Zac Brown and a Classic

Hey Darlins,

Well, my favorite country music blog Saving Country Music posted an article and a couple of You Tube videos of three of my favorites today.

Miss Sunset thought she had died and gone to heaven.

It was the amazingly underrated Sturgill Simpson and The Zac Brown Band with their rendition of one of my favorite songs, The Marshall Tucker Band classic, "Can't You See".

Awesomeness.

Here's the link if anyone is interested (If? Of course you are!):

I'm Baaaaaacccckkkkkk...with Some Hank Williams

Hello Darlins,

Yes...after a long, long hiatus I am back and I am bloggin' again!

I just cannot abandon y'all.

So what happened?

Well, Miss Sunset had an illness that made it uncomfortable to type and then she got distracted and now that it's country season (she's going to see Blakey Shelton twice in October) it's time to start blogging again.

So let's shake the dust off of the keyboard and get started again...

There is much buzz over British actor Tom Hiddleston (yep, Loki from "Thor" and "The Avengers") portraying American country music icon Hank Williams. Most of the brouhaha and protesting has come from Hank Williams' grandson Hank Williams III (Hank3) who feels that a Brit cannot capture the essence of an American country music icon.

http://www.savingcountrymusic.com/hank-williams-iii-criticizes-casting-of-grandfather-in-biopic

http://www.savingcountrymusic.com/hank3-to-tom-hiddleston-you-got-no-soul-or-moan-in-your-voice

Whether or not Hank3's concerns are founded remain to be seen, but the buzz about the movie has revived my interest again in Mr. Williams music.

When I was a baby, my great aunt used to rock me to sleep by singing Williams' classic "Hey Good Lookin'". She also used this song to lull my brother and cousins to sleep, as well.

So every night while working on my novel, I make it a point to listen to country and its my duty to listen to one Merle Haggard song and one Hank Williams song every night.

This is one of my favorite Hank Williams songs.

Enjoy.

Why Miranda Is a Badass

Hey Darlins,

Country Outfitter posted an article called "Ten Reasons Miranda Lambert is a Badass".

I agree wholeheartedly, especially when it comes to, "She sings real life lyrics" (no bullshit songs about tractors, beer, and tailgates), "She has good taste in men" (The Blake), and "She is the BFF of man's best friend" (we both love to rescue animals).

HOWEVER, as a woman who has tattoos, though I have to disagree on the one that says "She has tattoos".  I don't really feel having tattoos makes one a badass.  It does, however, make you a person who can appreciate the art of tattooing and doesn't mind allowing your body to be a canvass.  I personally plan on getting two more, one to cover my entire back and one that covers the back of my entire calf, but I don't think it makes me that badass.

That one seemed like filler.

I would have replaced that one with, "She Is Part of One of the Most Badass Girl Groups to Hit Country", referring of course to The Pistol Annies, comprised of Lambert ("Lone Star Annie"), Ashley Monroe ("Hippie Annnie") and Angaleena Presley ("Holler Annie").  Why won't these woman go on tour together?!!

Arrrggggh!

Anyway, here is the article, itself.  Enjoy
